Going to Class, 2003 - C-print, 40 x 50 cm, edition of 5 After having lived for several years in Great Britain, I chose to return and photograph in a boarding school, a private context, one not so easily accessible to strangers and very much a part of the myth of the teen. A number of behaviour patterns, like the books laid out on the wall outside during morning chapel, made me curious about the concept of uniformity. At an age when it seems so imperative to distance oneself from one's elders, there sometimes exists a blind desire to fit in with one's peers. This propensity to mimic is exacerbated by the boarding school microcosm and the relatively small interference of the outside world. |
