Sgraffiti

Sgraffiti I, 2006 - Carbon Pigment Print Collage, 126 cm x 98 cm. Unique piece.

These pieces were commissioned for the exhibition Venice: City of Dreams? at the Sotheby's George Street Gallery (Jan. 2007). The title refers to a decorative technique popular in the Italian Renaissance that consisted of scraping away one layer of white plaster to reveal the black wall beneath. When invited to reflect on Venice, the variety of its textures came to mind, as well as its inherently labyrinthine nature and the palimpsest History has made of the city's architecture. Venice seems to be shifting, moving, changing incessantly - Sgraffiti encapsulates this energetic confusion by mimicking the resolutely urban action of poster-ripping.
